Dingmans Falls water cascades and plunges 130 feet down and allows it to claim title as the second-highest waterfall in the state, with nearby Raymondskill Falls being the highest.
Meander through a beautiful hemlock ravine on the flat boardwalk trail to Dingmans Falls. The boardwalk is well maintained along its 1/2 mile length, and very easy to walk with children. You can play the counting game with your kids – there are 240 steps to the top of the falls.
Almost immediately after starting the trail, the beautifully named Silverthread Falls can be seen on the right. The cascade gracefully drops 80 feet in a thin ribbon. The boardwalk winds through rhododendron shrubs and past tall hemlock trees on a brief walk to the waterfall. You can view the falls from the platform, or trek the final tenth of a mile via staircase for a birds-eye view from the upper falls.
Tips: Wear comfortable shoes. If it’s the rainy season, wear boots – Dingmans Creek Trail can get very wet. Best to come early on the weekends in season – it gets crowded! No doggies allowed. There are restrooms and water available at the Visitors Center. Both Silverthread Falls and Dingmans Falls are visible from a handicap-accessible trail.
The Dingmans Falls Visitor Center can help you hit two of the park’s most popular waterfalls in one easy hike. The center serves as the trailhead for the Dingmans Creek Trail. Park Rangers are friendly. Visit in July or August when the rhododendron thickets along the trail are in full bloom.
The Visitor Center also offers educational exhibits and guided waterfall walks in season. The center is open from Memorial Day through Labor Day from sunrise to sunset. Call the information desk at park headquarters for updates in the spring as to whether the road has been opened at (570) 426-2452. The trail to the falls is generally open as soon as the road is open.
During the summer, parking can fill by 11:00 am on the weekends. There is no RV parking at this location. Some RV parking is available one mile from the visitor center, at the corner of PA Route 209, and Johnny Bee Road.
The visitor center and the falls are at the end of a 1-mile approach road off Johnny Bee Road, which intersects PA Rt. 209 near milepost 14, just south of the traffic light at PA Routes 209 & 739 in Dingmans Ferry.
