Tank Hollow Overlook provides a stunning vista above the Lehigh River Gorge. It’s more a delightful trip for scenic view lovers than it is an actual hike. Bonus: it’s really easy to get to! Take a relatively easy hike that leads to a beautiful panoramic vista overlooking the Lehigh River.
Bring Fido! Dogs are welcome as long as you keep ’em on a leash.
The trailhead for the hike to Tank Hollow Vista is along Behrens Road just outside of Jim Thorpe. Most of the hike is on state game lands. If the gate is open from the first lot, you can shorten this hike to just under a mile by driving down the game land road. Parking for this trailhead is off of Behren’s Road on Buzzard Point
If the gate is not open, park in the lot just off of Behrens Road. You will have to walk a little over a mile on the game land road. This part of the hike is not terribly scenic, but the payoff is worth it.
After descending a small hill along the road after about a mile (if the first gate is open, you can drive to a small parking area just at the top of this hill, making your hike much shorter), look for a trail on the right side that goes into the woods. (You should turn at N 40 56.740, W 075 41.513 if using GPS.) Follow this path for just under half of a mile and arrive at beautiful Tank Hollow Vista.
Pack a lunch and enjoy taking in the view from the rock outcrops!
“Located in Forest Township, minutes from Jim Thorpe, Tank Hollow Vista offers one of the best scenic views east of the Mississippi. It’s a relatively easy hike with an amazing reward, perched high atop the Lehigh Gorge.”
