Mount Tammany is the southernmost peak of the Kittatinny Mountains, in Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey, United States. It is 1,526 feet tall, and forms the east side of the Delaware Water Gap. Across the Gap is Mount Minsi, on the Pennsylvania side of the river.
The 3.5 mile hike of Mount Tammany offers perhaps the best view in New Jersey, with a panoramic overlook of the winding Delaware River and Mt. Minsi on the Pennsylvania side. This is one of the most popular hikes in New Jersey. Expect to have a lot of company on this trail.
The Mount Tammany Trail (Red Dot) is one of two trails that lead to the outstanding view looking into the Delaware Water Gap from Mount Tammany. This hike is one of the most challenging in the park. Combining the Mount. Tammany Trail (Red Dot) with the Pahaquarry Trail (Blue Blaze) makes a three-mile loop trail. If making a loop hike, consider hiking up the Red Dot Trail and down the Pahaquarry Trail (Blue Blaze), because most people find it to be an easier route. Over twenty miles of trail can be connected together in the Worthington State Forest area to fill the entire day.
It’s extremely rocky (extremely!) so be sure to wear hiking boots! Start early because the parking lots fill up quickly and the trail can become very crowded. This allows you to have an enjoyable hike without being rushed.
“We have been to Mount Tammany many times and the most recent one was on a sunny Winter day. The hiking trail to peak is definitely the best in Delaware Water Gap.
Park and leave your car at the Dunnfield Creek parking lot. You’ll want to get there early because it fills up quickly. Your best bet is to go on a weekday or early in the morning.
There are two parking lots at trail head and they are always filled up quickly on any sunny day. Generally we follow the red-dot trail up and blue-dot trail down. The round trip is about 4 miles with total ascent about 1500 ft. Majority of the trail is modestly difficult, with a couple of steep but short segments on the way up. The round trip takes between 2 – 3 hours, including a break on top to enjoy the beautiful view.”
“I wanted to do the hike to Mount Tammany ever since my daughter went on the same hike with he friends.Never did I expect it to be a grueling one. I am not an athletic person nor a climber and this was a very difficult hike for me. The climb was steep with rocky pathways which made it even more difficult. So if you are not in the best of shape expect this hike to be a strenuous one. I was able to complete the loop by going up the red trail and coming down the blue trail. The view was amazing :)”
