The Southern Color Zone is set to explode into brilliance on October 20. Mother Nature puts on a dazzling display of color every autumn. It’s peak season to be outside, but make sure you enjoy all the autumn goodness before it leaves.
The southern color zone encompasses southern Monroe County and Carbon County, including Jim Thorpe fall foliage. Start to notice slight changes in Red Maple and Black Gum in higher elevations as the foliage season is just starting to begin. Full color is at less than 5% with 90% of the leaves on the trees. The projected date for peak color is October 29.
“Usually, the peak fall foliage season arrives around the middle of October, with patchy color in the first two weeks of the month. The Pocono Plateau will experience the color change about a week to 10 days sooner than the valleys, due to cooler weather in the highlands,” said Ben Gelber, a meteorologist and Pocono weather expert.
