Avian Influenza continues to spread fast across the country and in New York State. In response to this, the Cornell Livestock Program Work Team have developed two webinars to assist small farms and backyard laying flock owners to make informed decisions around getting laying hens and managing disease, while keeping abreast of the current status of HPAI and how they can keep it out of their flocks:
1. Raising Laying Hens for Eggs: Is it all it’s cracked up to be?
Tuesday March 11th, 6:30pm – 7:30pm, via Zoom
This virtual program is intended to explore local regulations for chicken ownership, expectations for your flock, and raising layers from chicks to egg- laying adults. Additionally, this workshop will go over the costs of owning a laying flock as well as the best practices and regulations for selling eggs. A question and answer session will follow the presentation. 2. Avian Disease and Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza – the latest updates and what it means for poultry health
Tuesday, March 18th, 6:30pm – 8:00pm, via Zoom
This virtual program welcomes Dr. Jarra Jagne of Cornell’s College of Veterinary Medicine and Dr. Chad Wall of NYS Department of Agriculture and Markets for an evening of learning about avian disease, including Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI). Topics to be covered include updates on the HPAI outbreak, the symptoms of HPAI, and common small flock diseases. Additionally, this workshop will go over HPAI disease look-alikes and the ins and outs of keeping your birds safe.
